NAIROBI, May 14 (BERNAMA-NNN-KBC) -- The Cabinet Secretary (Minister) for Health, Sicily Kariuki, says the government has been forced to source for specialist doctors from Cuba so as to bridge the current medical staff shortfall.

In defending the move to import doctors from Cuba, Kariuki said Sunday that the country was in dire need of specialists for the various illnesses and that the government was looking for about 100 doctors.

The move was taken to address the shortage gap in major county hospitals across the country, she said speaking while on an inspection tour of the Engineer County and Referral Hospital in Nyandarua County, about 1349 kilometres north of here.

Despite looming opposition from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists' Union, which has threatened to render the importation of the 100 Cuban doctors fruitless if their grievances are not addressed, the government says the ship has already set sail and there will be no turning back.

Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia who was present supported the move to bring in the Cuban specialists, saying this would help address the serious staff shortage in the health sector.....
