Stand-in Southampton captain Ryan Bertrand hinted in an interview with Sky Sports last week
that he could yet stay with the club next season – in what would be his
fifth at St Mary’s – with the recent turnaround under Mark Hughes
potentially proving to be key in any decision made.
Saints avoided the drop despite their
last-gasp 1-0 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday as Swansea City
failed to get the win and 10-goal swing that they required, and it was
certainly a close shave for the south coast outfit in what was a hugely
disappointing campaign.
Bertrand has already been linked with the
likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City in
recent weeks, and the St Mary’s faithful are probably expecting him to
leave given he hasn’t always been overly enthusiastic on the pitch, or
at his best – something that ultimately cost him his place in Gareth
Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.
We asked Southampton fans to vote on our poll
to see whether they want the 28-year-old to stay, and, perhaps a little
surprisingly given his demeanour at times, a whopping 90% said they
would.
Having been a great servant for the club over
the course of the last four years it is maybe more understandable, and
it will be interesting to see what happens with the left-back in the
coming weeks, with Sam McQueen and Matt Targett both waiting in the
wings to take his spo
