Tanzania conducting due diligence of firms wishing to build giant hydro-power project
DODOMA, TANZANIA, May 14 (BERBANA-NNN-DAILY NEWS) -- The Tanzanian
government has announced that it is conducting due diligence in respect
of several firms which have applied to undertake the construction of the
2,100 megawatts (MW) Rufiji Hydropower project at Stiegler's Gorge
along the Rufiji River eastern Tanzania.
Energy Minister Dr Medard Kalemani told some members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals over the weekend that the due diligence would enable the government decide which firm should execute the multi-billion dollar and largest hydro-electric project in the country.
Five companies had been shortlisted out of 7 which submitted bids to implement the project during the tendering process when it was opened in December last year.
Dr Kalemani said: "It's not too late for the government to implement the project. It could have taken us five years but I can confirm to you that we are on the right track."
Tanzania aims to boost its power generation capacity to feed the demand for electricity for for domestic and industrial use.
The existing hydro-electric power projects in the country have a combined capacity to generate just 560 MW.....
