Tanzania: Legislators Want Education Sector Problems Fixed Faster
By Abdallah Msuya
SOME
members of the Zanzibar House of Representatives have advised the
government to speed up the process of hiring teachers and creating
enough room for absorbing pupils, as among the prerequisites for
improving education.
Debating the budget
proposals for the 'Minister of State (President's Office - Regional
Administration, Local Government, and Special departments), the
lawmakers said shortage of teachers and lack of desks constituted a
critical problem.
The Office is also
responsible for the ongoing Decentralisation by Devolution project. Mr
Hamad Abdalla Rashid (CCMWawi) and Mr Ali Suleiman Ali (CCMKijitoupele)
argued that the implementation of the decentralisation policy in
education could not succeed without overcoming those problems.
In his response,
the Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training Mr Mmanga
Mjengo Mjawir, said that while they were being addressed, the government
had received more than 1.4bn/= for desks from donors and 'school desks
port fee.
' He said: "We need
113,790 to address the shortage of desks, but through the money we have
collected so far, we expect to get 30,300 pieces of furniture from a
Chinese firm. This will ease the demand, as we appeal to people to
continue donating.
