Work, loathe begging, Chaka tells Africans
The entrepreneur and humanitarian threw the challenge in Dar es Salaam ahead of the African Reconnect Conference, which is scheduled for today at the APC Hotel and Conference Centre in Bunju.
Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan isexpected to grace the opening session of the event. “Africa is a beautiful continent, with every amenity that we need...we have all the rich minerals and these resources have to support everybody rich or poor, men and women, from the continent irrespective of one’s social status,” said the musician.
Ms ChakaChaka said she is in the country to inspire changes to Tanzanian women through the Africa Reconnect Conference. With the fourth industrial revolution in session, she argued, the place of women should be appreciated.
It’s critical for women to come together because they had for long time been disenfranchised, segregated and humiliated. For the past 20 years, she said it was rare to find the woman on the back of the camera but currently such narratives have changed as there are no jobs specifically for women or men.
“It’s also important that we as women work together, collaborate, learn from one another but not forget that men are our counterparts. Women and men have to work together and not compete but complement each other, there are no jobs specifically for women…women are pilots, doing robotics, ICT...” she inspired.
Ms ChakaChaka further said in the current globalised world there is a place for the woman, especially a typical African woman, “Women have always been in the forefront of change and when you empower women, you empower the whole nation.”
South Africa based President of Africa Reconnect Numdeni Chengeta described the conference as an annual women empowerment initiative. Tanzania has been chosen for this year conference, considering that the country has always been a second home to South Africans. “
Many women who have made it in life have gone an extra mile by defying all the odds and challenging the status quo. And, some of these women have been appreciated and celebrated while others have been completely forgotten.
This platform aims at recognising these women and shading more light to others through knowledge and skills sharing,” said Ms Chengeta. She revealed that the conference was preceded by a legacy training whereby women shared intensive knowledge with their counterparts on what have been termed as male dominated careers.
Through the programme, she said women will be able to pass on the knowledge and skills to their counterparts from the grassroots level. Deputy High Commissioner for Tanzania in South Africa Rosemary Jairo said as a representative of the country, her office role was to explore economic opportunities that will benefit the nation.
Ms Jairo pointed out that Tanzania and South Africa’s Presidents last May had reestablished their bilateral relations through agreements reached.
