Tanzania: 70 Foreign Athletes Coming for Marathon Races in Kilimanjaro


Arusha — INTERNATIONAL organisations - Compassion and Muskathlon - have come up with long distance races to the cause of needy children in eight African countries.
The Marathon is set to take place at Roo in Kilimanjaro region on May 17, this year, involving runners at 21, 42 and 63 kilometres as well as cycling races for 120 kilometres.
A press statement released here by Compassion Tanzania yesterday had it that more than 70 foreigners from Germany and Switzerland will take place in the race while the same number would be Tanzanians.
The statement unveiled that every foreign participant will be contributing 10,000 euro - that is equivalent or support 10 needy children in sponsorship. The competition targets to get support for children from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Togo.
The statement further said that the money raised would be passed through Compassion International so as to cater for different needs of the said children through evangelistic churches that are in collaboration with Compassion Tanzania.
"The foreigners will also be meeting with the children as they will tour some centres that are in collaboration with Compassion Tanzania.
Some have been sponsoring the children," read the statement in part.
The visitors are expected to be in the country for a week and will also take time to visit tourist attractions in the country.
Compassion International Tanzania supports needy children in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kigoma, Manyara, Coast, Morogoro, Iringa, Dodoma, Kilimanjaro, Singida, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Mara, Tabora, Lindi, Geita and Mtwara.
